November 2005

Kintama Research Corporation - Pacific Offshore Shelf Tracking Programme
SubOceanic mobilises to Brooks Peninsula aboard the Vessel MV Lasqueti Storm to carry out the locating and recovery of several Salmon Tracking Receivers equipped with malfunctioning acoustic releases, transponders and salmon movement data tracking recorders. This project was carried out off the West Coast of Vancouver Island. During a recovery operation on the 18th of November a Giant Pacific Octopus attacked the Falcon ROV wrapping its tentacles around the manipulator and ROV frame. With the use of the ROV thrusters in full reverse the Octopus was dislodged from the ROV and blasted clear by the ROV's propwash. A video of this encounter with an octopus can be viewed at this link:

Western Forest Products
SubOceanic mobilises to Howe Sound, Vancouver, to a WFP booming ground to search for a lost boom boat that sank in the booming grounds area.

Komex Engineering
SubOceanic mobilises to Becher Bay, Victoria to carry out an outfall pipeline inspection over a distance of 1.5 kilometers.

September 2005

Greater Vancouver Regional District
SubOceanic is awarded the inspection of the Iona Island, Greater Vancouver Regional District's twin WWTP Deep Sea Outfall pipelines in 110 meters of seawater.

This contract entailed the ROV Inspection and measurement of clear openings on 200 diffusers on 2 pipelines over a 505 meter length, ROV seabed surveys of 400 meters and sidescan sonar survey of 1500 meters plus. All video recording was Digital and the new Viperfish Digital Recording system with hard drive was utilised. SubOceanic completed this Lump Sum Contract in a 3 day period, a day ahead of schedule and 2 days ahead of the previous contractor's time frame. The Iona Outfall area is notorious for its weather exposed location, bad subsea visibility and extremely strong currents created by the Fraser River outflow.

August 2005

Ocean Marine – North Cowichan Regional District
In mid August SubOceanic carries out the ROV inspections of the Chemainus and Crofton Outfall Pipelines in a single day.

July 2005Oregon State University
In late June SubOceanic mobilises to Newport Oregon aboard the Research Vessel Wecoma to carry out a search and recovery operation for scientific equipment lost in 120 meters and 200 meters of water respectively. The Falcon locates and recovers a lost experimental fuel cell in 120 meters of water and after 9 hours of seabed searches locates a lost corer in 200 meters of water. This corer was subsequently recovered aboard the RV Wecoma.
June 2005Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food - MAFF Canada
In mid June 2005 SubOceanic mobilises to Clayoquot Sound, West Vancouver Island, aboard the Ocean Dynamics vessel M.V. Dyna Cat to carry out the salvage recovery of the MAFF Stealth ROV from a depth of 188 feet. The MAFF ROV had become totally entrapped in a large amount of 12mm scrap rope on the seabed. The SubOceanic Falcon ROV utilised its rope cutter on the Falcons Gripstick manipulator to cut the Stealth ROV free and return it safely to the MAFF support vessel.

JDP & International Telecom
In early June 2005 SubOceanic completes a Post Lay Survey of the Malibu Christian Youth Clubs power cable from McCunnel Creek to the Queens Reach across the Princess Louisa Inlet.
May 2005JDP & International Telecom
In early May SubOceanic mobilises to the Princess Louisa Inlet to carry out ROV support for the laying of an armoured power cable across the Princess Louisa Inlet from McConnell Creek to the Malibu Club, a distance of over 3 kilometers to a maximum depth of 1,300 feet.
This Project will be completed at the end of May and SubOceanic will be carrying out the Post Lay ROV Inspection of the cable at that time.
March 2005DND - Canadian Navy Pacific Fleet
SubOceanic Mobilises to Quadra Island to salvage a Navy S4 Phantom ROV lost in 460 feet of seawater. The duration of the recovery from the ROV leaving surface locating and connecting a recovery rope to the Phantom ROV and returning to surface was less than 15 minutes. The HMCS Whitehorse provided tracking for the Phantom transponder interrogation and triangulation to its location. Onboard the ROV Support vessel M.V. Kokanee a Canadian Navy Clearance Diving and ROV Team Operated a Navy Track Point System tied into a Transponder on the SubOceanic Falcon ROV. This system was used to guide the Falcon to the lost ROV for salvage by the Falcon.

Department of Fisheries & Oceans Canada
SubOceanic carries out an Inshore Rockfish Habitat Survey and a Ling Cod Specific survey off the East Coast of Gabriola Island for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

During this Project the Falcon ROV carried over 11 kilos of equipment as cargo comprising a twin laser system, a large battery pack and a data logging depth and temperature unit. The Falcon was flown with a clump weight of 180 pounds with a 40 ft stray umbilical from the clump weight enabling the DFO and Vessels onboard GPS to track the Falcon within close proximity to the vessels footprint & course followed.

The ROV carried out 31 dives over 26 hours (With no downtime or breakdowns) covering well over 11 kilometers of very craggy seabed, in live boat mode, to depths of 189 meters, flying at an altitude above seabed of 200mm to 500mm at speeds of up to 1.3 knots.

The DFO were extremely pleased with the quality of the video footage obtained and results of this biophysical survey.
February 2005Western Pulp
SubOceanic carries out the inspections of five of the deep-water vessel moorings at Squamish for Western Pulp to a depth of 200 meters
January 2005

In January 2005 SubOceanic mobilizes to Fort St. James to carry out further searching for two individuals lost with their Snowmobile through the ice into Lake Stuart. Temperatures encountered were as low as minus 43 degrees Celsius, despite which the Falcon ROV performed exceptionally well. Searches were conducted in 22 ice access hole locations, to a distance of 305m in diameter at each location using the Tritech Sector Scanning sonar.
